Armide
by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687)
This is the first time a Lully opera will be staged at Drottningholm, and it will be interpreted by a French artistic team together with musical director and conductor Francesco Corti. Director Florent Siaud and choreographer Natalie Van Parys have previously worked together at Drottningholm with Marc Minkowski and Ivan Alexandre and their Mozart-Da Ponte trilogy. Set and costume designer is Philippe Miesch. With extensive experience of Baroque opera, he will use the theatre’s treasure trove of stage decorations and the unique stage machinery.
Armide is Lully’s last collaboration with the poet Philippe Quinault, whose libretto is a mixture of dramatic tension, supernatural elements and amorous despair. The work was an immediate success and was widely performed in the late 17th century. The opera contains many dance scenes in which the supernatural beings reflect the mental state of the main characters, who struggle with joy and horror, reality and fantasy.
