Opera Atelier: Canadian Film Premiere of Handel’s The Resurrection
As Cleophas, McHardy has a mellifluous tone and an unfaltering vocal dexterity that makes the numerous coloratura passages in “Vedo il ciel, che più sereno” sound easy. (Opera Canada, Joshua Chong, May 31, 2021).
Equally gripping, and often outright owning both stage and screen, were Allyson McHardy’s richly contralto interpretations of Handel’s boldest lyrical inspirations, especially “Piangete, sì, piangete” set to double recorder obbligati (Alison Melville and Grégoire Jeay) midway through Act I, a classic weeping aria set low in G minor and one of the most glorious pieces I have ever heard her sing. (Ludwig van Toronto, Stephan Bonfield, May 28, 2021)
On earth we’re consoled by the voices of soprano Meghan Lindsay as Mary Magdalene and mezzo-soprano Allyson McHardy as Cleophas, a series of flawless arias from each. (barczablog, June 2, 2021)
